Sources of Inspiration...
"There are no rules in film making, only sins. And the cardinal sin is Dullness." Frank Capra.
Whether it be a piece of music or an interesting image, a smell or touch, what inspires us will always be led by our personal experiences as it is these which make us who we are. There is a theory that before man evolved to live on land, we communicated through song - in a similar way that whales do and that this is why the part of the brain that interprets and reacts to music is situated so close to the emotional centre of the brain. The physical proximity of these two areas of the brain means that listening to music triggers an emotional response.
This can be seen most effectively in film, where music is often used to heighten the emotional intensity of a particular scene, or cause the audience to feel fearful or happy. It is this idea that I find interesting - that humans react uniquely to music and every culture has a music of some kind and it is still and most likely will always be used as a universal communicator. This would also explain in some way why music can be such a powerful source of inspiration - perhaps it is our personal interpretation of a message from the originator of the music, which makes us remember those memories we thought we had forgotten, or makes us feel a certain way.
People often seem to disregard the arts as a non-essential luxury. But I disagree with that - I think the arts are an expression of humanity in an increasingly sterile and impersonal world.
